Bathing dogs: often or only occasionally?

Background

Since dogs share our homes, some owners bathe them every week or two to keep odour and dirt under control. Others warn that frequent washing strips the skin's natural oils and can cause dryness and itching, so wiping paws after walks and bathing about once a month is plenty. Breed and skin condition change the ideal routine.
