Why
The ASPCA lists aloe as toxic to dogs and cats. The yellow latex just under the leaf skin contains anthraquinone glycosides (such as aloin) with a strong laxative effect. Poisoning is usually mild to moderate, but small dogs and cats can dehydrate quickly. The clear inner gel is less toxic, but it's hard to separate it completely from the skin and latex at home.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet chewed an aloe leaf, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even without symptoms. Share how much, when and a photo of the plant. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction. Keep aloe plants out of reach.
Watch for these signs
Within hours: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and poor appetite. Urine may turn reddish, and tremors are rarely reported. With severe diarrhea, watch for dehydration.
FAQ
Can I put aloe gel on my pet's skin?
Not recommended, since pets lick it off. Use a pet-specific product or something your vet prescribes.
My dog drank an aloe drink.
Commercial drinks use the gel but are sugary and vary by brand. Note how much was drunk and call your vet.
