Can dogs and cats eat Apple?

Apple flesh is a fine small treat for dogs and cats, as long as you remove the seeds, core and stem and cut it small.

Why

Apples offer fiber and vitamins with few calories, making them a popular dog treat. The seeds contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide in the body, and the tough core can lodge in the throat or gut. The natural sugar can cause diarrhea in larger amounts. Cats don't need fruit as carnivores, but a little is fine.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash, remove the seeds, core and stem, and cut into bite-sized pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough, within 10% of daily calories. Skip apple juice and apple pie.

Watch for these signs

Too much causes loose stool, diarrhea or gas. A swallowed core can cause vomiting, loss of appetite or constipation.

FAQ

My dog ate a few apple seeds. Is that dangerous?

Swallowing a few whole seeds is unlikely to cause poisoning. If your dog ate whole cores or shows any unusual signs, call your vet.

Can I leave the apple peel on?

Well-washed peel is fine. For sensitive stomachs or cats, peeled apple may be easier to digest.
