Can dogs and cats eat Cream & Whipped Cream?

Cream and whipped cream are high in fat and lactose and easily upset dogs' and cats' stomachs; don't give more than a lick.

Why

Cream is 30โ€“40% butterfat, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea and, in larger amounts, pancreatitis. Most adult dogs and cats don't digest lactose well. Whipped cream contains sugar, and sugar-free versions may contain xylitol. Cafรฉ 'pup cups' have made cream a popular pet treat, but it's not good to give often.

How to give it / if eaten

It's best not to offer it. If you do, limit it to a lick or two of unsweetened cream, only rarely. Call your vet if your pet ate a lot or has a history of pancreatitis. For sugar-free whipped cream, check the label for xylitol.

Watch for these signs

Within hours: loose stool, diarrhea, gas or vomiting. After a lot, watch over 1โ€“3 days for pancreatitis signs like repeated vomiting, belly pain and loss of appetite.

FAQ

Are cafรฉ 'pup cups' okay?

A small one now and then is usually fine, but it's high in fat and lactose. Skip it for sensitive stomachs or pets with pancreatitis history, and keep it for special occasions.

My dog ate a lot of cake frosting.

It's high in fat and sugar, risking stomach upset and pancreatitis. Check for chocolate or xylitol, and call your vet if a lot was eaten.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
