Can dogs and cats eat Pear?

Pear flesh is juicy and full of fiber and is fine for dogs and cats in small amounts; remove the seeds and core and cut it small.

Why

Pears are juicy and provide fiber and vitamins, so they make a nice treat. Like apples, the seeds contain small amounts of cyanide-forming compounds, and the hard core can lodge in the throat or gut. The sugar can cause diarrhea in larger amounts, and canned pears come in sugary syrup.

How to give it / if eaten

Peel, remove the seeds and core, and cut into bite-sized pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs keeps treats under 10% of daily calories. Skip pear juice and canned pears.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause loose stool, diarrhea or gas. A swallowed core can lead to vomiting, loss of appetite or constipation.

FAQ

Can I give my dog pear juice (baejeup)?

Pear juice is concentrated sugar and easily causes diarrhea. A little fresh pear is better.

My dog ate pear seeds. Should I worry?

A few swallowed seeds are unlikely to cause poisoning. Call your vet if a whole core was eaten or vomiting starts.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
