Can dogs and cats eat Raspberry & Blackberry?

Raspberries and blackberries are a fine treat for dogs and cats in small handfuls; they contain a trace of natural xylitol, so don't overdo it.

Why

Raspberries and blackberries are low in calories and rich in fiber and antioxidants. Raspberries contain a tiny amount of natural xylitol; a few berries are not a concern, but it's wise to avoid large quantities. The fiber can cause diarrhea if your pet eats a lot. Cats don't need fruit, but a small taste is fine.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash them and give them whole or halved. Two or three berries for cats and small dogs and a small handful for large dogs is enough. Skip jam, sweetened berries and berry-flavored snacks.

Watch for these signs

Too many can cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting.

FAQ

Isn't the xylitol in raspberries dangerous?

The amount is tiny, so a few berries won't cause trouble. Products with added xylitol, like gum or sugar-free jam, are a different story, so always check labels on processed foods.

Are Korean wild raspberries (bokbunja) okay?

The fresh berries are fine in small amounts, like raspberries. Bokbunja wine and syrup contain alcohol or sugar and should never be given.
