Can dogs and cats eat Watermelon?

Seedless watermelon flesh without the rind is a hydrating summer treat for dogs and cats in small amounts, though too much can cause diarrhea.

Why

Watermelon is over 90% water and low in calories, making it a nice hot-weather treat. Many black seeds can cause a blockage, and the tough green rind and white part are hard to digest and can lead to stomach upset or obstruction. Lots at once can cause diarrhea from the sugar and water.

How to give it / if eaten

Cut out the red flesh only, remove all seeds and serve in bite-sized pieces. A piece or two for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough, within 10% of daily calories. Frozen cubes make a cool treat.

Watch for these signs

Too much causes diarrhea, loose stool and frequent urination. A lot of rind or seeds can cause vomiting, belly pain or constipation.

FAQ

My dog ate some watermelon seeds. Is that okay?

A few seeds usually pass right through. If a lot were eaten, or a small dog vomits or becomes constipated, see your vet.

Can I give the white part or rind?

The white part and rind are tough and hard to digest and can cause stomach upset or blockage. Give only the red flesh.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
