Do guinea pigs really need a companion?

Background

Guinea pigs are herd animals and tend to be far more active and relaxed with a buddy, and some countries even discourage keeping them alone. Others point out that mismatched pairs can fight and that space and costs double, so a single pig with a very attentive owner may be okay. Gender and temperament matter when pairing.
