Why
Chocolate milk and cocoa drinks contain the same methylxanthines as chocolate (theobromine and caffeine). Regular chocolate milk has less than a chocolate bar, but strong cocoa made from powder, or any amount for a small dog or cat, can be risky. Lactose and sugar add diarrhea to the mix. Because it's hard to know the exact cocoa content, we rate it as dangerous.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet drank some, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away. Share how much, when, and the package (cocoa content) to help assess the risk. Don't induce vomiting at home unless a vet tells you to.
Watch for these signs
Usually within 6โ12 hours: vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, restlessness and a racing heart. Severe cases can progress to tremors, wobbliness and seizures.
FAQ
My dog licked a few sips of chocolate milk.
A few sips rarely cause serious trouble, but it depends on weight and product. Check the carton and call your vet for advice.
What about banana or strawberry milk?
They have no chocolate, but the lactose and sugar can cause diarrhea. Don't give them on purpose.
