Why
Ethanol hits small bodies much harder, depressing the nervous system and dropping blood sugar and body temperature. Besides beer, wine and spirits, pets can get alcohol from boozy desserts, hand sanitizer, fermented fruit and rising bread dough. Cats are small enough that even a few licks can be dangerous.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet drank or licked alcohol, contact your vet or an emergency clinic right away and tell them what it was, how much and when. Keep your pet warm, and don't induce vomiting at home unless a vet tells you to.
Watch for these signs
Within 30โ60 minutes: stumbling, drooling, vomiting, drowsiness and slowed breathing. Severe cases bring low body temperature, tremors, seizures and unconsciousness.
FAQ
My dog had a sip of beer. Is that okay?
A single sip may not harm a large dog, but small dogs and cats can be affected by very little. If your pet's walking or energy changes, go to a vet right away.
Is cake made with liquor dangerous?
Rum cakes and liquor-soaked fruit desserts can still contain alcohol, plus sugar, fat and often raisins. Don't share them, and call your vet if your pet ate some.
