Why
Processed meats are very salty, so larger amounts cause extreme thirst and stomach upset. They're also fatty, risking vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis. Sausages and some hams contain garlic or onion powder and spices. That's why pet-specific sausage treats exist: human processed meat isn't a good fit.
How to give it / if eaten
Don't give them as treats. If your pet ate a slice or two, offer plenty of water and watch. Call your vet if it ate a lot, like a whole pack, or if the label lists garlic or onion. A swallowed plastic sausage casing can cause a blockage.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst and frequent urination may occur. Repeated vomiting and belly pain over 1โ3 days may mean pancreatitis. Very large amounts can cause salt poisoning signs like wobbliness and tremors.
