Why
Lamb is a common pet food protein and is sometimes used as an alternative for pets with other meat allergies. It's relatively fatty, though, and fatty cuts risk stomach upset and pancreatitis. Cooked lamb rib bones can splinter and injure the gut. Lamb skewers (yang-kkochi) are coated in cumin, salt and chili and shouldn't be shared.
How to give it / if eaten
Cook it plain, trim all fat, remove bones and cut it small. Keep it within 10% of daily calories as a treat, starting small to check the stool.
Watch for these signs
Fatty cuts may cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting. If a bone was swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting, poor appetite, constipation and bloody stool.
FAQ
My dog ate a lamb skewer.
The seasoning can upset the stomach, and a swallowed skewer stick is very dangerous. If the stick is missing, call your vet right away.
Is lamb food good for allergies?
Lamb isn't inherently hypoallergenic; it helps only when it's a protein the pet hasn't eaten before. Plan allergy diets with your vet.
General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
