Why

Crab meat is a lean protein, but the hard, sharp shell and legs can injure or block the mouth, esophagus or intestines. Some pets are allergic to shellfish. Soy-marinated and spicy raw crab (gejang) are loaded with salt, soy sauce, garlic and chili, and being raw they carry parasite risk. Imitation crab is processed fish paste with lots of salt and additives.

How to give it / if eaten

Steam or boil it plain, pick the meat completely free of shell and give a small amount: about a teaspoon for cats and small dogs and a tablespoon for large dogs. Start very small the first time and watch for itching or stomach upset.

Watch for these signs

Vomiting or diarrhea may occur. If shell was swallowed, watch for drooling, repeated vomiting, poor appetite and bloody stool. Allergic reactions show as itching, facial swelling or hives.

FAQ

My dog chewed up crab shells.

Sharp shells can injure the gut. Estimate the amount and call your vet to ask whether to watch or come in.

Is imitation crab okay?

Imitation crab is high in salt and additives, and some contains onion extract. One or two pieces just need watching, but don't use it as a treat.
