Can dogs and cats eat Eel?

Cooked eel meat is okay in small amounts, but it's fatty and bony; raw eel blood is toxic, and sauced eel shouldn't be shared.

Why

Eel is rich in protein, vitamin A and fat. Raw eel blood contains a protein toxin, which is destroyed by thorough cooking. The high fat can cause diarrhea and pancreatitis in larger amounts, and fine bones can catch in the mouth or throat. Grilled eel is usually glazed with a sauce of soy sauce, sugar and garlic.

How to give it / if eaten

Cook it thoroughly without sauce, pick out the bones carefully and give only a little: about a teaspoon for cats and small dogs and a tablespoon for large dogs. Don't give raw eel, sauced eel or fried eel skin.

Watch for these signs

Lots of fatty eel can cause loose stool, diarrhea or vomiting, and repeated vomiting with belly pain over 1โ€“3 days may mean pancreatitis. A stuck bone causes pawing at the mouth and drooling. Raw eel may cause vomiting, diarrhea and drooling.

FAQ

My dog ate a piece of sauced eel.

One piece usually causes no more than stomach upset. Offer water and watch, but call your vet if the sauce was garlicky or your pet is small or a cat.

Eel is a stamina food. Can I give it to my sick pet?

Fatty eel can actually burden a sick pet's stomach. Ask your vet about a recovery diet.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
