Why
Myristicin acts on the nervous system and can cause disorientation, hallucinations, and raised heart rate and blood pressure. A sprinkle baked into bread or cookies usually causes only mild stomach upset, but eating whole nutmeg or a spoonful of powder can be serious. Nutmeg desserts also tend to be loaded with sugar, butter and nuts.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate whole nutmeg or nutmeg powder, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away with the amount, time and product. Don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, belly pain, dry mouth, disorientation, odd behavior or agitation, a fast heartbeat and high blood pressure, and seizures in severe cases. Signs can last up to two days.
FAQ
My dog ate a cookie with a little nutmeg in it.
Serious poisoning from the small amount in a cookie is uncommon. Do check for chocolate, raisins, xylitol or macadamias, and call your vet if you see vomiting or strange behavior.
Is cinnamon dangerous too?
Cinnamon isn't nearly as toxic, but inhaling the powder can cause coughing and airway irritation, and large amounts can upset the stomach. There's no need to feed it.
