Why
Raw eggs can carry bacteria such as Salmonella, which can make pets sick and spread to the people they live with. Avidin in raw whites binds biotin (vitamin B7), so frequent long-term feeding can lead to skin and coat problems. Cooking eliminates both issues.
How to give it / if eaten
Serve eggs boiled or cooked without oil or salt. If your pet already ate a bit of raw egg, it's usually fine; just watch the stool for a day or two. Keep treats, eggs included, under 10% of daily calories.
Watch for these signs
Bacterial infection can cause vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, lethargy and poor appetite. Long-term frequent feeding may lead to a dull coat and flaky, itchy skin.
FAQ
Is raw egg yolk good for my dog's coat?
Most of the yolk's nutrients survive cooking, so a cooked yolk gives the benefit with less bacterial risk.
Can my pet eat eggshells?
Sharp pieces can scratch the mouth or gut, and shells can carry bacteria. If you think your pet needs extra calcium, ask your vet about the right approach.
