Can dogs and cats eat Pumpkin Seeds?

Shelled, unsalted, cooked pumpkin seeds are fine for dogs and cats in small amounts; grind them and sprinkle a little on food.

Why

Pumpkin seeds provide fiber, protein and minerals like zinc, and nothing in them is known to be toxic. They do carry fat and calories, so too many can cause diarrhea. The outer shell is tough for small dogs and cats to digest. Some say pumpkin seeds clear worms, but there's no evidence they can replace a dewormer.

How to give it / if eaten

Shell the seeds, roast them lightly without salt and grind them. A few seeds a day for cats and small dogs and about a teaspoon for large dogs is plenty. Skip salted snack seeds.

Watch for these signs

Too many can cause loose stool or diarrhea. If lots of in-shell seeds were eaten, watch for vomiting or constipation.

FAQ

Can pumpkin seeds deworm my pet?

There are claims about compounds in the seeds, but they haven't been proven to deworm pets. Use a dewormer prescribed by your vet.

Can I give the seeds straight from a squash?

Raw seeds are slippery and still in their shells, which makes them hard to digest. Rinse and dry them, shell them, roast them and grind them first.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
