Can dogs and cats eat Sunflower Seeds?

Shelled, unsalted sunflower seeds are fine in small amounts, but shells and salted seeds in quantity can cause stomach upset or blockages.

Why

Sunflower seed kernels aren't toxic and contain vitamin E. They're fatty, though, so too many can cause diarrhea or vomiting. The pointed shells can't be digested and can irritate or block the gut in quantity. Snack sunflower seeds are often salted or seasoned.

How to give it / if eaten

Give a few shelled, unsalted seeds to cats and small dogs, or a small pinch to large dogs, only occasionally. You can grind them and sprinkle on food. Avoid salted, flavored or in-shell seeds.

Watch for these signs

Too many may cause diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy. If many shells were swallowed, watch for repeated vomiting, constipation and belly pain; after salted seeds, watch for extreme thirst and frequent urination.

FAQ

My dog ate the hamster's sunflower seeds.

A small amount of unsalted seeds is usually fine. If your dog ate a lot in the shell, check the stool and call your vet if vomiting or constipation develops.

Is sunflower oil okay?

It's used in pet foods and isn't toxic, but it's very calorie-dense. There's no need to add it, and too much fat can cause diarrhea.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
