Why
Pine nuts have no known toxins, but they're among the fattier nuts. Fatty foods can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and large amounts raise the risk of pancreatitis. For small dogs and cats, even a few pine nuts are a lot of calories. Dishes with added sugar or salt, like pine nut porridge or candied pine nut bars, are best avoided.
How to give it / if eaten
It's best not to offer them. A few eaten by accident can be watched at home; even plain, unsalted pine nuts should be limited to one or two. If your pet ate a lot or has a history of pancreatitis, call your vet.
Watch for these signs
Vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy may occur. After a large amount, watch over 1โ3 days for pancreatitis signs such as repeated vomiting, a hunched painful belly and loss of appetite.
FAQ
Can I share a little pine nut porridge?
Pine nut porridge is rich and usually seasoned with salt or sugar, so it's best skipped. For a sick pet, use a vet diet or a little plain rice porridge instead.
Do pets get 'pine mouth' like people do?
There's almost no information on whether pets experience the bitter taste disturbance some people get. Because of the fat, small amounts are best regardless.
