Why
A warm stomach is the perfect place for dough to rise, so it can swell, stretch and block the stomach, and in large dogs it may contribute to bloat with twisting (GDV). Meanwhile the yeast ferments sugars into ethanol, which can cause alcohol poisoning. Cats face the same risks.
How to give it / if eaten
If your pet ate raw dough, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away, even for a small amount, and share the time and rough quantity. Don't induce vomiting or force water at home unless a vet tells you to.
Watch for these signs
A swollen, tight belly, unproductive retching, drooling and restlessness. Alcohol effects can add stumbling, drowsiness and low body temperature.
FAQ
Is baked bread okay?
Plain baked bread is fine in small amounts because the yeast is dead. Skip any bread with raisins, garlic, chocolate or nuts.
My dog ate a little dough before it had risen. Is that safe?
Unrisen dough with live yeast will keep rising in the stomach, possibly even more. Call your vet right away.
