Can dogs and cats eat Rice?

Plain white rice is easy to digest and fine for dogs and cats in small amounts, but avoid seasoned rice like fried rice or bibimbap.

Why

Rice isn't toxic, digests easily and is a common carbohydrate in pet foods. Vets sometimes recommend a bland diet like chicken and white rice after a stomach upset. It does add calories, so large portions lead to weight gain, and diabetic pets should only have it with vet guidance. Cats, as carnivores, don't really need it.

How to give it / if eaten

Serve plain cooked white rice, cooled, in small amounts. Brown rice is higher in fiber and should be cooked very soft. As a treat or topper, keep it under 10% of daily calories.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause constipation, gas and weight gain. Rice allergy is uncommon, but consider it if itching or diarrhea appears.

FAQ

Should I give rice porridge when my dog has diarrhea?

For a mild upset, vets sometimes suggest a short bland diet like chicken and plain rice porridge. If diarrhea lasts more than a day or comes with blood, vomiting or lethargy, see a vet right away.

Is brown rice okay too?

Yes, but its extra fiber can be harder to digest. Cook it soft and give only a little.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
