Why

Bell peppers contain almost no capsaicin, so unlike hot chilies they aren't irritating, and they offer vitamin C and beta-carotene. Red ones are the sweetest and most nutritious. The skin can be tough to digest, so lightly cooking helps. Too much may cause gas or diarrhea.

How to give it / if eaten

Remove the seeds, stem and white ribs, then give small pieces raw or lightly steamed. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is enough. Don't give peppers cooked with seasoning or oil.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause gas, loose stool or diarrhea.

FAQ

How is this different from hot chili peppers?

Bell peppers have almost no heat, but hot chilies like cheongyang peppers irritate the mouth and gut. See our chili pepper page.

Is paprika powder okay?

Paprika powder can be spicy or part of a seasoning blend with garlic or onion powder. There's no reason to give it.
