Can dogs and cats eat Zucchini & Korean Squash?

Zucchini and Korean squash (aehobak) are fine vegetables for dogs and cats in small amounts; cook them plain and cut them small.

Why

Zucchini and Korean squash are watery, low in calories and non-toxic. Cooked soft, they digest easily and make a good diet treat. Very rarely, an unusually bitter squash contains high levels of toxic cucurbitacins, so throw out any that taste bitter. Squash pancakes or squash from doenjang stew come with oil, salt and garlic.

How to give it / if eaten

Steam or boil it plain and cut it into small pieces. One or two pieces for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs is plenty, within 10% of daily calories. Raw slices are okay if thin and few.

Watch for these signs

Too much may cause loose stool or diarrhea. After a bitter squash, vomiting, diarrhea or drooling may occur.

FAQ

My dog ate a bit of squash pancake.

A piece usually just causes loose stool from the oil. If it had dipping sauce or your dog ate a lot, watch for vomiting or diarrhea and call your vet if it continues.

How does this differ from kabocha pumpkin?

Both are fine, but kabocha is sweeter and higher in fiber, while zucchini is watery and lower in calories. See our pumpkin page too.
