Why
Soybeans provide plant protein and fiber and are used in many pet foods. Raw soybeans contain compounds that interfere with digestion, so always cook them, and too many easily cause gas and diarrhea. The tough pods can't be digested and may cause blockages. A few pets are allergic to soy. Avoid salted edamame, sweet braised beans (kongjaban) and roasted bean snacks.
How to give it / if eaten
Boil without salt and pop the beans out of the pods. A few beans for cats and small dogs and about a tablespoon for large dogs is enough. Halve or mash them for small dogs.
Watch for these signs
Too many may cause gas, bloating or diarrhea. If pods were swallowed, watch for vomiting and constipation; allergic pets may show itching and lick their ears or paws.
FAQ
Is soy milk okay?
Unsweetened soy milk is okay in small amounts, but many brands add sugar and it can upset the stomach. Check the label and offer no more than a few sips.
I heard legumes are linked to heart disease in dogs.
The US FDA investigated a possible link between grain-free diets heavy in legumes and dilated cardiomyopathy, but the cause is still unclear. An occasional small treat is a different matter.
