Can dogs and cats eat Perilla Leaf?

A plain perilla leaf or two usually causes no trouble, but there's little pet data, so be cautious, and never give seasoned or pickled perilla.

Why

Perilla leaves are a staple in Korea, but there is almost no research on their safety for dogs and cats. The perilla plant contains perilla ketone, which has caused lung damage in grazing livestock that ate large amounts, yet there's little evidence of problems in pets eating a bit of culinary perilla. The strong aroma and fiber can upset the stomach. Seasoned or pickled perilla leaves contain garlic, green onion and soy sauce, which are much riskier.

How to give it / if eaten

There's no need to offer it. If you do, wash a plain leaf, chop it finely and give no more than half a leaf to cats and small dogs, or about one leaf to large dogs. Start with a tiny amount and check the stool.

Watch for these signs

Vomiting, diarrhea or drooling may occur. After seasoned perilla, also watch over the next few days for onion/garlic poisoning signs like weakness, pale gums and red urine. If breathing becomes fast or labored, call your vet right away.

FAQ

My dog ate one pickled perilla leaf.

Pickled perilla is salty and often contains garlic. One leaf can often be watched at home with plenty of water, but call your vet if your dog is small or ate several.

What about perilla seeds or perilla oil?

Perilla seeds and oil are fatty and can cause diarrhea in larger amounts. They contain omega-3s, but if you want a supplement, ask your vet about a pet product.

General information only. Weight, age and health conditions change how a pet reacts, so ask your vet if you are worried.
