Can dogs and cats eat Broccoli?

Broccoli is a healthy vegetable for dogs and cats in small amounts, but large amounts can irritate the stomach, so keep portions small.

Why

Broccoli is rich in fiber and vitamins C and K. The florets contain isothiocyanates, though, which can irritate the gut and cause stomach upset in larger amounts, so it's best kept well under 10% of daily intake. Tough stalks cut too large can be a choking hazard.

How to give it / if eaten

Wash, lightly blanch or steam with no seasoning, and chop small. One or two small florets for cats and small dogs and a few for large dogs keeps treats under 10% of daily calories.

Watch for these signs

Too much can cause gas, bloating, vomiting or diarrhea. A piece of stalk caught in the throat causes gagging.

FAQ

Can my dog eat raw broccoli?

Raw is okay, but lightly cooked is easier to digest and causes less gas. Chop stalks finely.

Can I give broccoli every day?

Small amounts are fine, but large daily portions can upset the stomach. Rotate it with other vegetables.
