Why
Carrots are high in fiber and beta-carotene and low in calories, so they're a great diet-friendly snack, and chewing raw carrot may help scrub teeth a little. Big chunks can be a choking hazard, and too much may pass undigested or cause diarrhea. For cats, cooked and softened is best.
How to give it / if eaten
Wash and serve raw in thin slices, or cooked plainly and diced. A few pieces for cats and small dogs and a few small sticks for large dogs keeps treats under 10% of daily calories.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause loose stool, gas or undigested carrot in the stool. A large piece stuck in the throat causes gagging or coughing.
FAQ
Can I give raw carrots?
Yes, raw carrots are fine for dogs. Slice them thin for small dogs, and cook them for cats or sensitive stomachs.
Can too much carrot turn my pet's skin orange?
That's very unlikely at treat-sized amounts. Still, rotate carrots with other treats rather than feeding lots every day.
