Why
Corn kernels aren't toxic and are a common pet food ingredient. The problem is the cob: it barely digests and is just the wrong size, so swallowed pieces often lodge in the intestines and need surgery. Buttered or salted corn and caramel popcorn add fat, salt and sugar.
How to give it / if eaten
Cut the kernels off the cob and serve them plain and cooked in small amounts, keeping treats under 10% of daily calories. Throw cobs in a lidded bin your pet can't raid. If a cob was swallowed, call your vet right away, even without symptoms.
Watch for these signs
Lots of kernels can cause diarrhea or undigested kernels in the stool. A swallowed cob leads to repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, no stool and belly pain over hours to days.
FAQ
My dog swallowed a corn cob. What should I do?
Cobs often don't pass and cause blockages. Even if your dog seems fine, contact your vet or an emergency clinic now, and don't try to induce vomiting at home.
Can dogs eat popcorn?
A few kernels of plain air-popped popcorn without salt or butter are fine. Pick out unpopped kernels, which can crack teeth or get stuck.
