Why
Dogs and cats get all the sodium they need from their food. Eating lots of salty snacks, jerky or ham causes intense thirst and vomiting, and with large amounts or no water, blood sodium can spike and affect the brain. Rock salt, homemade play dough and seawater are especially dangerous, and onion or garlic flavored snacks add another risk.
How to give it / if eaten
Use pet treats rather than human snacks. If your pet grabbed a few, offer plenty of fresh water and keep an eye on them. If it ate a lot, or salt or play dough, call your vet or an emergency clinic right away and don't induce vomiting at home without a vet's instruction.
Watch for these signs
Small amounts usually just mean more drinking and urinating. Larger amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, wobbling, tremors and seizures.
FAQ
My dog ate one chip. Is that okay?
One plain chip is usually fine. Make sure water is available, and check with your vet if it was onion, garlic or chocolate flavored.
Can I give my dog human beef jerky?
Human jerky is salty and often seasoned with garlic, onion and soy sauce. Choose unsalted jerky made for pets.
