Why
Sweet potatoes provide fiber, beta-carotene and vitamins and are a popular dog treat. Raw sweet potato is hard and difficult to digest and can cause stomach upset or blockage, so always cook it. It's high in starch and sugar, so large, frequent portions add weight and unbalance the diet. Hard dried sweet potato chews can choke a dog that swallows them whole.
How to give it / if eaten
Peel, steam or bake without sugar, butter or salt, cool and cut small. A spoonful or two for cats and small dogs and a few pieces for large dogs is enough, within 10% of daily calories.
Watch for these signs
Too much can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, and frequent feeding adds weight. If raw or large chunks were swallowed, watch for vomiting and belly pain.
FAQ
Can I leave the skin on sweet potato?
Cooked skin isn't toxic, but it's tough and harder to digest. Peeling is the safer choice.
Are dried sweet potato chews okay?
Additive-free ones are fine, but they're hard and can choke a dog that gulps them. Cut them to size and supervise.
